Germany and Britain urged the European Union (EU) and Indonesia to begin discussion of free trade agreements (free trade agreement / FTA) this year to remove restrictions that inhibit the increased trade.

Richard Graham, Britain's Prime Minister Trade Representative for Indonesia, said Indonesia needs to open trading market to be more connected to markets in other parts of the world.

Georg Witschel, German Ambassador to Indonesia, hoping discussion FTA could start this year, given the Indonesian government will be busy general election (election) in 2014.

"EU-Indonesia FTA discussions should be started because there are still some regulatory restrictions and tariffs that inhibit strengthening trade cooperation," said Witschel said in a presentation press conference in Jakarta on Monday (07/01/2013).

Besides being able to increase the market for European products, according to Graham, the FTA will benefit Indonesia given the high import tariffs and imposed quality standards authority in Europe against products from Indonesia.

Graham and Witschel sure the local industry will not be disturbed by the increasing number of European products that have flooded the market in Indonesia. According to them, European products targeting the upper middle class sector.

"We are targeting the upscale market, while products from Indonesia, such as those sold at the Matahari Department Store, to target the mid-market Dengah medium price level in the UK," said Graham.
